In response to God's call Johannesburg North Church exists to LOVE God fully through worship and our lives; to love the PEOPLE around us, to provide a place to BELONG, a place where together we can GROW and LEARN to REACH OTHERS with JESUS LOVE.
I believe that a God-honouring church is nurtured and nourished through an individual and a corporate commitment to :-
• Prayer
• Life Change
• Integrity and authenticity
• Community
• Diversity
• Excellence and relevance

The above represents my personal vision for Johannesburg North Church. I would like to invite fellow members to post their vision for our church.

UNITY

Scripture reading: woman caught in adultery

John 7:53– 8: 9

I became an Adventist when I was in my teens. I can just imagine the surprise on the faces of the congregation in this church the first Sabbath our family attended here. The service was about to begin and everyone was seated in “their’ seat, (You know how it is if anyone takes “your” seat!!) when in troops this parade……. Mom and Dad in front, eyes darting nervously from side to side searching for some vacant places, followed by a string of 9 kids – like a row of ducklings following their parents into a pond. These rows don’t accommodate 11 people – even 11 new, sticking out like sore thumbs people – so we had to split up, us big ones finding seats and lifting little ones onto our laps to fit in.

We were welcomed after the service and told to feel at home and gradually in the weeks and months that followed we did begin to feel that we belonged. We had joined a family rather like ours. Quite a big family composed of a wide variety of people – each with their own quirks and beliefs and tender spots.

When we went on holiday, you can just imagine how cramped it was to travel to Durban in a station wagon with a family that size. Each of us had our place to sit but as the miles got longer the spaces seemed to get smaller, and the bickering would begin:

Two weeks ago the church got together for a church social.  We closed Sabbath together with songs and smiles and then went through to the hall to surprise Lyndle and Gilda.  They were led blindfolded in and seated on chairs in the middle of the hall and greeted with a boisterous ‘Surprise’ as they took their blindfolds off.  Lyndle was then dressed up like a beautiful bride with a stunning white lacy table cloth for a veil and make up and then given presents of which she had to guess the identity or suffer a forfeit of messing up her beautiful make up in a bowl of flour to retrieve a smarty.  After a short snack time the games began.  The children were up first with a game of duck, duck goose and then names were picked and our first actors took to the stage.  My favourite game was the alphabet game in which each person had to say a sentence starting with the next letter of the alphabet relating a common topic.  As the games continued people became more confident and when the prepared games were over, John led the remaining people in more games.  The evening was full of fun and laughs and was a good opportunity for us to practice our acting skills and get to know people.

Perhaps the reason God doesn’t explain everything to us from the beginning, or ask for our co-operation in the assignments He sends us off on, is because He expects more from us than what we think we can give, or than we feel like giving Him. But I am glad that He does. How else would we know that we can accomplish His purpose through us? And how else could we show our gratitude for all He’s done for us, and our willingness to share His blessings? How else would He touch the world and show His love if not through His people?

Being a Christian is sort of like agreeing to work for the CIA or FBI in those movies Gary likes to watch – we are sent on assignments by the Top where we don’t know all the details or all that will be required of us during the mission, but because we believe in the Cause, we are willing to agree to this. When I signed on for the position of Christian I knew some of the history of the organization – that being a Christian means caring, sharing and sacrificing. I also know the stories of the early church: how they shared everything and cared for one another and I grew up on mission stories of people who gave their lives and were sent by God to do big things and go very difficult places. I didn’t sign up uninformed or unaware.

Well, my latest assignment has been of this sort. And I am asking now for help in it! Our sister in Christ, Lindy, and her family have been going through a very tough time. The latest of which is that she and her daughter, little Melissa, who is seven, have been diagnosed with MDR (multi-drug resistant) TB. They have both been transferred to Sizwe hospital for treatment which could last for months. This is a good thing as they are together and they are receiving good treatment. But it has huge implications on her family. Michelle and Matthew are left without a mom and a home and no-one to provide for them.  Thank the Lord Lindy’s Mom, Lizzy, is able to step in and become their caregiver. But they still need a lot and this is where I am asking for you to step in and help a family who desperately needs our help and love.

01_Sermon: Do not worry about Tomorrow by Ps. Ian Grobler PDF Print E-mail

Matthew 6:31-34"Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?'  32For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.  33But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.  34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Two very interesting stories are found in the second book of Kings 6 and 7.  Chapter 6 tells of the extreme frustrations experienced by the king of Syria.  Every time he tries to make war against Israel, they evade him.  2Kings 6:8, 9  8Now the king of Syria was making war against Israel; and he consulted with his servants, saying, "My camp will be in such and such a place." 9And the man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying, "Beware that you do not pass this place, for the Syrians are coming down there." Just imagine how this king felt.  At the same time, imagine the excitement of the king of Israel every time Elisha brought positive news about the day of tomorrow.  One day the king of Syria finds out who the informer is and sends an army to surround Samaria and silence Elisha once and for all.  The story is interesting as there seems to have been no revelation to Elisha about this attack.  The next morning Elisha’s servant comes storming back with fear all over his face: "Alas, my master! What shall we do?" Elisha answers: 16"Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them." 17

And Elisha prayed, and said, "LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see."
